Treatment
...discovering the future of women’s health care
Currently, the only definitive way to diagnose endometriosis is through surgery. This complexity in diagnosis is costly, carries some risk and therefore prevents women from being treated in an accurate and timely fashion.
Typically the goals for treatment of endometriosis are pain reduction or helping a woman to conceive. The options for treatment are medication or surgery. Hormonal therapies are designed to suppress the endometriosis lesions. Unfortunately, for many patients these medications are ineffective or the side effects unacceptable. Surgery for endometriosis involves removing or destroying the lesions and the associated scarring. For some women, nothing is effective in controlling their symptoms and they ultimately make the difficult decision to have their uterus, or uterus and ovaries removed.
The Juneau Biosciences team expects that the discoveries made through the End to Endo study will lead to improved diagnosis and treatment options for women with endometriosis.
